Germain Hatcher – “Beyond Bullwhip Days”
Germain Hatcher is not only an amazing artist – she’s also a mentor at YAC! This year, she’s been showing her exhibition “Beyond Bullwhip Days” around Monterey County. Her pieces were displaced at the Avery Gallery in Seaside, CA in February, as well as the Luna Gallery in San Juan Bautista this June.
These pieces were inspired from a book called “Bullwhip Days: The Slaves Remember” edited by James Mellon, featuring transcripts of formerly enslaved people and their experiences through slavery. Her pieces also explore the history and origins of food during the transatlantic slave trade. Germain has spent years working on these pieces, and we sat down with her to better understand key pieces in the show.
