YAC Media Guidelines
Text Grace (831) 676-7129 for any questions! (or send photos/videos)
Video & Photo: Hourly (on the hour to mark the beginning)
Start a horizontal 4k 60fps video, count down, pause, and have them say “hour #!!!!”
After they shout this out, people are smiling or making funny faces - take a ton of photos at the same time and keep the video rolling until it dies down.
after 1am, we will only take posed photo+video during 3am, 5am, 7am, 8:45am
SNAPSHOT = unposed photo+video of the studio at 2am, 4am, 6am, 8am. whisper “hour #”
If any awake YACsters want to join in, they are more than welcome to! but we won’t be forcing everyone to get up for a photo
iphone: check your settings for quality, start the video, and press on the white circle at the bottom right to take a photo
android: check your settings for quality, start the video, and press on the white circle at the top right to take a photo

Photos: guidelines
Generally speaking, most photos that you think are good will work. It’s always nice to get wide, moderate, and tight shots, variable angles, horizontal/vertical, and plenty of interaction. Here are a few examples of YAC’s signature angles & compositions!

main studio wide - subjects' heads in the center

mentoring moderate - subjects' heads at the center

main studio wide - subjects at the 2/3 line

artist working - focus on piece at center, artist to the side

artist working - face is clear and subject is at center

artist working - side view, artist head at center
Videos: required steps
If your phone has HDR video, please turn it off.
iphone: Settings > Camera > Record Video > toggle OFF HDR video
android: Camera > Settings > Videos > turn off HDR
When recording, film in 4K at 60fps (if you can’t, record in 4K at your usual fps)
iphone: open camera > switch to video > check upper right corner and check to see “4K • 60” like in the image. If you don't (you might see HD and 30), just tap on the respective number you need to change.
android: (didn’t have any personal screenshots, so look at the yellow markings) open camera app > tap settings icon > scroll down to videos > tap rear video size > ensure that it’s 16:9 > under resolution, select UHD (60fps)
Video: guidelines
Composition guidelines are pretty much the same as photos. Taking both horizontal and vertical will be helpful to me, but this year we are really looking for more horizontal videos.
Camera movements should be slow and steady. Rules apply for both vertical and horizontal
If there's a lot of subjects moving around in a frame, you can be stationary (lots of people walking, running, etc). If there's very little movement, you can move a little. This helps you choose more intentional movements and it'll be less distracting later!
stationary
tracking subject
left > right, right > left
out > in, in > out
very rarely do I use top > bottom and bottom > top unless I'm showing a big piece or scene
I also film in both 0.5x, 1x, and 3x depending on the context. Do whatever makes the most sense or do a mix! Please utilize the set focal lengths on your camera and avoid zooming in with your fingers (degrades quality). Of course these are general guidelines and I trust that you can make whatever choices that you feel appropriate!
I typically like to move my body and not the camera, this helps me have more stability. So if I'm filming from left > right, I'm holding my phone and pivoting my body! I usually have my feet planted on the ground and if I'm doing out > in or in > out, I'm leaning my body in or out. See videos below.
See more video examples below. Observe the different camera angles, movements, and compositions.
